A Bull and a Donkey Turn the Pasture Into a Methods Section
What happened
UPI reported on November 2 that researchers studying geladas in Ethiopia instead documented a selective socio-sexual association between Achille, a bull, and Patroclo, a male donkey. The Current Biology paper records 51 mounting events from March 6 to March 19, 2026, alongside repeated licking, rubbing, nuzzling and close proximity. Both animals had access to other potential partners, and another male donkey showed avoidance when the bull approached him.
Why it matters
The scientifically useful finding is the pattern around the mounting behavior: repeated proximity, selective affiliation and a contrast with another donkey’s avoidance. It broadens the record of same-sex and interspecies behavior beyond reproduction. It does not establish a human-style sexual identity, reveal exactly what either animal felt, prove a lifelong bond or explain the behavior’s evolutionary function; the authors present a single observational case and questions for future research.
The Blappos angle
The observed behavior, comparison case and inference limits end above. The Blappos interpretation: the pasture instituted a plus-one policy and accidentally opened an ethology department. The side-by-side animals and surprised clipboard researchers are disclosed original AI-generated editorial illustration—respectful satire, not field documentation or a claim that scientists can read animal minds.
