Betelgeuse May Have a Star Moving Through Its Atmosphere

What happened

ScienceDaily highlighted ALMA and Very Large Array research on November 3 indicating that Betelgeuse's close companion, Siwarha, may be disturbing the red supergiant's extended atmosphere. The team combined radio observations from 2021–2026 at seven frequencies from 22 to 485 gigahertz. Betelgeuse appeared more elongated when the companion was expected to be seen to the side and rounder when it was expected in front of or behind the star, a pattern consistent with an orbiting body perturbing the gas.

Why it matters

The companion is too faint to appear directly in these radio observations; the evidence comes from repeatable changes in Betelgeuse's outline and temperature structure. The authors say more orbital coverage is needed to test the interpretation. The measurements also confirmed a cool layer near the visible surface at about 2,200 kelvin, but they do not mean Betelgeuse is exploding or establish a supernova timetable. The paper appeared in September and ALMA issued its primary release October 30; November 3 is the digest clock.

The Blappos angle

The radio evidence, frequency range, temperature result and uncertainty end above. The Blappos interpretation: Betelgeuse's atmospheric guest list includes one star small enough to be named 'her bracelet' and bold enough to walk through the venue. The giant star, companion, wake and radio dishes are disclosed original AI-generated editorial illustration—not telescope imagery, direct detection or a prediction of imminent explosion.
