What happened

UPI reported on November 4 that a National Police Air Service helicopter's tracking trail over Hampshire appeared to trace male anatomy. Fleet resident Gordon Bird said he checked the tracker after the aircraft circled for roughly 15 to 20 minutes late Monday night. NPAS told the BBC that the pattern was unintentional: the crew was supporting Thames Valley Police while searching for a vehicle that had failed to stop, orbiting locations assigned during a changing operation.

Why it matters

A flight track records where an aircraft went; it does not, by itself, establish what the crew intended to draw. NPAS says police aircraft do not follow predetermined routes because operations respond to events on the ground. The legitimate search and the unfortunate geometry can both be real. The public report does not identify the pursued vehicle, disclose an arrest or prove deliberate skywriting.
