Michigan Gets a 7,505-Square-Kilometer Flash
What happened
What Weird Shit Happened Today computed from NOAA GOES Geostationary Lightning Mapper data that a flash with a 7,505-square-kilometer optical footprint was detected at 46.89°N, 88.65°W in Michigan at 9:35 p.m. ET on October 12. The source describes the value as a computed observation from NOAA GOES GLM L2 LCFA data, not an official world record.
Why it matters
The Geostationary Lightning Mapper detects brief optical signals from lightning across wide areas, so an optical footprint is a satellite-derived measurement rather than the path of one cartoon bolt on the ground. Most flashes span roughly 10–100 square kilometers, while megaflashes can exceed 1,000; the 7,505-square-kilometer value is extraordinary but should retain its computed-data label.
The Blappos angle
Verified data and its limits end above. The Blappos interpretation: Michigan briefly installed one sky-sized camera flash and forgot to enable red-eye reduction. The magnet uses an original Great Lakes map and invented lightning scene—no NOAA seal, copied satellite frame or claim that the footprint was a ground-strike area.
