A Robot Becomes the Off-World Mileage King

What happened

Reuters reported on October 13 that NASA's six-wheeled Perseverance rover had driven 28.1 miles (45.2 kilometers) on Mars, surpassing Opportunity's distance record for any vehicle on a world beyond Earth. NASA's own comparison marks the mileage as of October 11; Perseverance landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.

Why it matters

This is a distance-and-durability record, not a speed record. A Jet Propulsion Laboratory project manager told Reuters that about 90% of Perseverance's drives are autonomous: the rover uses stereo images, a 3D terrain map and onboard path selection to travel safely between goals despite the communications delay between Earth and Mars.

The Blappos angle

Verified reporting ends above. The Blappos interpretation: the solar system's highest-mileage used car has one owner, 28.1 miles, extensive off-road use and absolutely no local pickup option. The magnet uses an original generic research rover and invented terrain—no NASA seal, JPL mark, mission photograph or claim that the record is finished growing.
