A 75,000-Year-Old Skeleton Records Care—and a Spear Wound
What happened
A Scientific Reports paper published October 15 describes Shanidar A, an older Neanderthal represented by a partial skeleton deposited about 75,000 years ago. Six heavily worn front teeth record a severe earlier facial injury that the individual survived. A roughly circular perforation in the left shoulder blade shows no healing and is consistent with a rounded wooden spear passing through the chest around the time of death. The body’s placement adds a fifth individual to a closely grouped mortuary cluster.
Why it matters
The same life contains evidence relevant to two difficult debates: long-term care and lethal trauma. The damaged teeth could have impaired eating, speech and pain-free daily life, making help from others plausible; the shoulder wound could have been a hunting accident or interpersonal violence, and the paper cannot distinguish between them. The cluster supports intentional funerary behavior, but motive and ritual meaning remain interpretations rather than directly observed facts.
The Blappos angle
Verified anatomy and inference boundaries end above. The Blappos interpretation: the archaeological record kept both the care plan and the incident report. The magnet is a respectful original reconstruction with an invented cave scene; it does not reproduce the remains, identify a killer or claim that the spear, clothing, faces or moment shown were preserved.
