Just Eat Puts Breakfast in a Pint, Then Pauses the Robot Camera
What happened
Al Jazeera reported on October 24 that Just Eat had apologized after a trial of AI-generated menu images grossly misrepresented some dishes and was paused for further development. The test applied labeled synthetic images to listings that lacked restaurant-supplied photos. Earlier detailed reporting showed the standout failure: a Northern Irish soda bread breakfast was interpreted as bacon, egg and sausage floating in a cola-like pint rather than food served with soda bread.
Why it matters
A menu image is a factual product claim, even when it is aesthetically persuasive and labeled as synthetic. Generating one without checking the cuisine, ingredients and plating can turn a helpful placeholder into false advertising at the exact moment a customer decides what to buy. The remedy is not just a better prompt: restaurants need approval, humans need a comparison target, uncertain dishes need no image, and mistakes need a visible correction path.
The Blappos angle
The trial, label, failure mode, apology and pause end above. The Blappos interpretation: the model saw ‘soda bread’ and promoted breakfast to beverage service. The magnet’s pint, food, diner, server and glitching tablet are original editorial illustration—not the live listing, a restaurant’s dish, an edible recipe, a Just Eat interface or proof that every image in the trial was inaccurate.
