San Francisco’s Robot Dogs Still Need Human Walkers
What happened
UPI reported October 28 that San Francisco startup Dimensional had advertised for people to walk robot dogs through public routes in the Dogpatch neighborhood. The since-deleted Bay Area Jobs post offered $20 an hour for four-to-six-hour shifts and required walkers to handle roughly 33-pound machines and carry a robot back if it failed. Founder Stash Pomichter told The New York Times, in a passage quoted by UPI, that the company is developing an open-source operating system for physical labor and still needs human help while its agents learn to control hardware.
Why it matters
The job makes a normally invisible stage of embodied-AI development visible: before a machine can work independently in public, people may have to supervise it, recover it and generate the real-world experience its software lacks. The listing is evidence of one company’s field-testing workflow, not proof that robot dogs are autonomous employees or that a $20-an-hour walker is being replaced by one.
The Blappos angle
The October 28 report, deleted-listing status, pay, weight and human-supervision boundary end above. The Blappos interpretation: the robot dog has reached the part of technological progress where it needs a human to take it outside. The magnet’s anonymous walker, machines and Dogpatch street are original editorial illustration—not the company’s robots, listing or a claim that a living dog was involved.
