Hell Creek Invents a Fruit-Eating Chicken Before Chickens
What happened
Reuters reported October 30 on Infernogallus jamesi, a newly described, roughly turkey-sized caenagnathid dinosaur from Montana's Hell Creek Formation. A nearly complete articulated skull, CT scans and jaw analysis showed a toothless parrot-like beak, a mobile lower jaw and wear features suited to repeatedly crushing soft plant material. The peer-reviewed Nature Communications paper describes this as the first direct evidence of a dinosaur specialized for an angiosperm-based diet.
Why it matters
The skull adds a rare feeding specialist to the ecosystem best known for Tyrannosaurus rex and shows that beaked dinosaurs divided plant foods more finely than a simple herbivore label suggests. Fruit eating is the authors' best-supported interpretation of the anatomy; the fossil does not preserve a last meal, and possible seed dispersal remains an ecological inference rather than a directly observed behavior.
The Blappos angle
The October 30 news hook, peer-reviewed anatomy, size, diet interpretation and inference boundary end above. The Blappos interpretation: T. rex handled enforcement while the hell chicken ran produce. The magnet's feathered dinosaur, berries and distant tyrannosaur are original editorial illustration—not the fossil, a life reconstruction from the paper or proof of a particular fruit species.
