Wales Finds the Beetle With Knee Oil and a Bee Taxi
What happened
The Guardian reported November 1 that breeding by the rare short-necked oil beetle has been confirmed at Castlemartin in Pembrokeshire, nearly 60 years after the species was last known to breed in Wales. Adults can release an oily yellow-orange defensive fluid from their knee joints. The larvae have hook-like feet and hitch rides on solitary bees to reach their nests, where they feed on pollen stores; conservationists say only about one larva in 10,000 reaches adulthood. The beetle was found at the site in 2020, but the 2026 distribution of larvae supplied the stronger evidence of a successful hatch and breeding population.
Why it matters
A rediscovered adult is encouraging; larvae spread across suitable habitat are stronger evidence that a population is reproducing. The species also depends on the right flowers, bare ground and solitary-bee hosts, so its recovery reflects a connected habitat rather than one charismatic insect. 'Nearly 60 years' refers to confirmed breeding in Wales, not an absence of every beetle sighting during that period.
The Blappos angle
The November 1 report, defensive chemistry, bee-hitchhiking life cycle and breeding evidence end above. The Blappos interpretation: evolution issued this beetle knee oil and a microscopic taxi account. The oversized beetle, larvae, bee and conservationist are original editorial illustration—not documentary wildlife evidence, a copied field photograph or a claim that the insects coordinate like human passengers.
