Crocodile Lineages Spend 240 Million Years Avoiding Sweater Weather

What happened

Reuters reported on October 21 that researchers analyzed an evolutionary tree of more than 400 extinct and living crocodile-line archosaurs, more than 7,000 fossil and modern geographic records and 52 global palaeoclimate reconstructions. The Science Advances study found that the lineage, which arose more than 240 million years ago, largely tracked suitable warm climates—expanding poleward during warmer intervals and retreating toward the equator as climates cooled.

Why it matters

That pattern is climatic niche conservatism: lineages follow familiar conditions geographically more than they repeatedly evolve broad new thermal tolerances. The models also suggest tropical and subtropical refuges remained suitable through most tested aftermaths of the end-Cretaceous impact. That makes climate one contributor to survivorship, not a solo explanation; lower metabolic demand, dormancy, ecology, geography and the severity of each extinction still matter.

The Blappos angle

Verified research, model scope and multi-cause boundary end above. The Blappos interpretation: evolution’s longest out-of-office reply says the team is unavailable anywhere requiring a winter coat. The magnet’s two animals, tropical refuge, meteor streak and climate contours are original scientific satire—not a copied fossil reconstruction, a map of one event or a claim that any individual crocodilian lived for 240 million years.
