Fossil reveals a platypus-otter-beaver mashup swimming with dinosaurs

What happened

Reuters reported on October 8 that researchers described Megacauda sungei, a semiaquatic mammal relative that lived about 165 million years ago in what is now Inner Mongolia. The roughly 20-inch animal weighed about 2.2 to 4.4 pounds, had a broad scaly tail, paddling limbs and teeth suited to catching slippery prey; the fossil preserves skin and fur impressions.

Why it matters

The researchers call it the oldest-known example of a semiaquatic lifestyle in mammalian evolutionary history. Its preserved throat anatomy also indicates that mammal-style chewing, swallowing and suckling structures evolved long before modern mammals diversified, strengthening evidence that dinosaur-era mammal relatives occupied far more varied ecological niches than the old shrew-only stereotype suggests.

The Blappos angle

The Original Water Mammal. Evolution appears to have beta-tested the platypus, otter and beaver in one compact Jurassic package. The card is an original imagined scene based on reported anatomy—not the published scientific reconstruction, a photograph or proof of fur color and behavior beyond the researchers’ interpretation.
