Nobel medicine prize honors the light switch for brain cells

What happened

Reuters reported on October 5 that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. The technique uses light-sensitive proteins to activate or silence selected neurons, building on research into channelrhodopsins from algae. The three laureates share the 12 million Swedish kronor award.

Why it matters

Optogenetics lets researchers test cause and effect in living neural circuits with unusual precision, improving the study of movement, behavior and neurological disease. The prize recognizes a powerful research method and development platform—not evidence that a near-term cure exists for every condition being studied with it.
