3.8-ton Canadian buoy crosses the Atlantic and lands in Ireland

What happened

UPI reported on October 6 that a Canadian Coast Guard buoy weighing about 3.8 tons washed ashore on Achill Island in County Mayo. Local officials were coordinating with the Canadian Coast Guard to secure and recover it; if it came directly from Canada, the Atlantic journey exceeded 3,000 miles.

Why it matters

The ocean can turn infrastructure into a long-distance drifter. Authorities want the buoy secured because a multi-ton navigation marker could become a hazard again if tides return it to the water; its exact starting point and route remain unknown.

The Blappos angle

3,000 Miles to Ireland. The buoy crossed an ocean without a passport, itinerary or even the courtesy of a checked-baggage receipt. The route graphic is illustrative because nobody has reconstructed its exact voyage.
