What happened

Researchers presenting at the American Chemical Society's Fall 2026 meeting reported that fragrance compounds released by cleaning products can react with indoor ozone and quickly form ultrafine particles. In their test rooms, the resulting particles were about 1 to 30 nanometers wide; the team reported exposures in the billions or trillions of particles and said some estimated doses matched or exceeded exposure near busy roads.

Why it matters

Ultrafine particles are small enough to reach deep into the lungs, but this presentation measured formation and exposure rather than proving a specific illness from ordinary cleaning. The practical finding is narrower and useful: fragrance-free products, good ventilation and avoiding ozone-generating devices can reduce the chemistry that creates the particles indoors.
