North Carolina Blueberries Have a Five-Inch Basement Tenant

What happened

A North Carolina State University research digest published November 6 identified the tile-horned prionus, Prionus imbricornis, as the long-mysterious larva damaging blueberry roots in North Carolina. The team trapped adults at six farms in four counties and compared standardized DNA barcode segments from larvae with known adult sequences, obtaining 98–99% matches. The larvae live underground, can grow to about five inches and may consume enough root tissue to kill a bush.

Why it matters

The species-level identification matters because similar-looking longhorn beetle larvae can attack different parts of a plant and require different management. NC State says guessing the wrong species can lead to an ineffective treatment and harm non-target insects. North Carolina is the first state to document this species feeding on blueberries, and the university says no insecticides are currently labeled for it in that crop; trials are underway, so the result is a diagnostic starting point rather than a ready-made control recommendation.

The Blappos angle

The field sites, barcode match, size, root damage and current control gap end above. The Blappos interpretation: every blueberry bush has discovered the worst possible basement tenant—five inches long, rent-free and already eating the plumbing. The cutaway field, larva, researchers, ruler and DNA sheet are disclosed original AI-generated editorial illustration—not a specimen photograph, management instruction or pesticide endorsement.
