NFL players cool melting cleats as Nashville turf reaches 157°F
What happened
During the September 20 Eagles–Titans game at Nissan Stadium, the Fox broadcast measured the synthetic playing surface at 157°F while the air temperature reached 95°F. Players poured water over their cleats, Eagles center Cam Jurgens changed shoes after a pair softened in the heat, and Titans coach Robert Saleh received an IV after the game.
Why it matters
The field reading was far above the surrounding air temperature and turned a bizarre sideline image into a player-safety question. Artificial surfaces can absorb and reradiate intense heat, making surface measurements, cooling plans, footwear checks and kickoff conditions materially different from the standard weather report.
The Blappos angle
Nashville installed a football field and accidentally preheated a baking sheet. By halftime, the equipment staff was running a pit lane for footwear that had reached al dente.
