U.S. forces complete withdrawal from Iraq after more than two decades
What happened
The final U.S. troops left Iraq on September 30, mainly departing an air base in Erbil, formally ending the U.S.-led coalition's Operation Inherent Resolve. The departure follows a withdrawal plan agreed in 2024. The Pentagon said the United States will continue targeted training and intelligence support for Iraqi partners.
Why it matters
The withdrawal closes a military presence that began with the 2003 invasion, paused at the end of 2011 and resumed in 2014 after Islamic State seized large areas of Iraq. Reuters reported that many Iraqis welcomed the departure while also worrying about security gaps, Iran-backed militias and remaining Islamic State cells. Iraq's prime minister said the coalition mission's end transfers full security responsibility to Iraqi institutions rather than ending the fight against terrorism.
The Blappos angle
Verified reporting ends above. The Blappos interpretation: after more than two decades, the gate finally records the last set of boot prints heading out. The magnet is deliberately restrained and uses an invented road, open gate, generic convoy and empty prints—not flags, insignia, politicians, soldiers' faces or licensed war photography.
