CEO spends $370,000 on romance, discovers gifts lack a refund policy
What happened
NDTV reported on September 12 that Singapore's High Court dismissed a lawsuit by TCI Express managing director Chander Agarwal against former girlfriend Felicia Lee. Agarwal said nearly US$370,000 he spent during their relationship—including luxury goods, first-class flights, trips, insurance premiums, an executive program and about S$17,000 for a feng shui master—were interest-free loans. The court found that most were gifts, said the alleged handwritten loan agreement was not proved and ordered Agarwal to pay legal costs.
Why it matters
The ruling turns on an ordinary but expensive distinction: money given inside a relationship does not become a repayable loan merely because the relationship ends. Without contemporaneous evidence of repayment terms, later labels and disputed paperwork carry little weight.
