Library receives magazine 132 years late; fine arrives historically waived

What happened

UPI reported that John Hanson returned a September 1894 issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine to Concord Public Library in New Hampshire. The item was 48,220 days overdue and would have accrued a theoretical $12,055 fine, but the library had frozen fines beginning September 1 and charged nothing.

Why it matters

A periodical surviving outside a library for more than a century can still carry local and research value when it returns. The fine waiver also illustrates the modern library goal behind eliminating penalties: getting missing material and patrons back matters more than collecting an impossible debt.
