$30 estate-sale painting discovers it has a $250,000 résumé

What happened

UPI reported that a small Gertrude Abercrombie painting bought for $30 at a Michigan estate sale was authenticated as the long-missing 1951 work “Alderman Merriam’s Shells.” Freeman’s auction house says the 8-by-11-inch oil-on-Masonite work will be offered October 1 with a $150,000–$250,000 estimate; it has not yet sold for that amount.

Why it matters

The discovery is a reminder that an estimate is not a sale result—and that provenance and expert authentication, not a lucky price tag alone, create art-market confidence. Freeman’s says Abercrombie gave the painting to physician John Reynolds in 1952 for medical services, and it remained with his estate until the 2026 sale.

The Blappos angle

Verified fact ends above. The Blappos interpretation: a $30 estate-sale purchase completed a 75-year performance piece called “Please Do Not Put This Beside the Used Bread Maker.” The low estimate is 5,000 times the purchase price; the high estimate is about 8,333 times—before auction fees, taxes or the inconvenient requirement that somebody actually buy it.
