Sixty organizations unite to build AI language data beyond the English internet

What happened

The Gates Foundation announced a coalition of 60 organizations—including Anthropic, Google and the OpenAI Foundation—to coordinate representative language-data work for artificial intelligence. The five-year effort aims to improve AI tools for more than 3 billion people whose languages are underrepresented online.

Why it matters

A model can only interpret the language patterns represented in its training and evaluation data. Weak coverage can turn an everyday medical, education or agriculture request into a dangerous mistranslation; the coalition cites a Malawi example in which a phrase meaning that labor had begun was rendered as a plumbing problem. The initiative is a commitment and governance project, not proof that the coverage gap has already been solved.
