New “fire amoeba” sets the heat record for complex life

Researchers described a newly identified amoeba from a neutral-pH hot-spring tributary near Drakesbad in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The organism, named Incendiamoeba cascadensis, divided normally at 145.4°F (63°C), remained active at 147.2°F (64°C) and recovered after brief exposure to 158°F (70°C).
