Seattle opens an “Inconvenience Store” with pre-tangled USB cords

What happened

Artists transformed a former 7-Eleven at Third Avenue and Pine Street into the Inconvenience Store, a temporary downtown Seattle exhibition arranged like a deliberately malfunctioning retail shop. The September 22 report described work from more than 70 mostly local artists across 14 mock departments, including pre-tangled USB cords, egg-shaped candles, snack-bag shoulder bags and an ATM sound sculpture. Admission is free; objects range from $1 to $10,000.

Why it matters

The project gives artists a highly visible storefront and turns an empty commercial space into a public cultural venue. It also asks visitors to look again at ordinary packaging, checkout rituals and disposable objects. The joke is an intentional art premise—not a claim that a real shop is deceiving customers—and the installation is expected to remain open on weekends into 2027.
