HYROX changes hygiene rules after Beijing competitor was allowed to continue racing

What happened

At a September 12 HYROX event in Beijing, Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk experienced bowel incontinence and continued competing. She later apologized, said she should have left the course, and withdrew her result. HYROX co-founder Moritz Fürste apologized for the organizers' response and said procedures and rules were being changed.

Why it matters

Competitors share indoor lanes and workout equipment. Race officials need a clear way to stop competition and clean a contamination hazard promptly, while treating the affected athlete with dignity. The event occurred September 12; subsequent apologies and rule changes were reported later.
