Sixteen Katmai bears enter the internet's weightiest election
What happened
Voting was underway September 24 in Katmai National Park and Preserve's 2026 Fat Bear Week. The public bracket features 16 brown bears and runs September 22–29, asking voters to compare how successfully the animals prepared for winter. The event is built around the park's live bear cameras and seasonal salmon-fed weight gain.
Why it matters
The contest is intentionally funny, but it turns remote wildlife observation into public education about brown-bear ecology, salmon runs and the energy reserves bears need for hibernation. Katmai Conservancy says the surrounding program supports interpretation, bear monitoring, research and the bear cams.
